Identification tests are a broad category of tests intended to verify the presence of a specific element, functional group or compound. Galbraith Laboratories provides identification testing by USP <191>, Spectrophotometric Identification by USP <197> and Thin-Layer Chromatography by USP <201>.

Spectrophotometric Identification Tests by USP <197>
Spectrophotometric identification tests by USP <197> rely on the use of Infrared or UV/VIS light to analyze an unknown sample and compare it a reference standard. The specific criterion for the basis of comparison is often provided in the monograph for the test substance. We can provide testing services to the requirements of USP <197> Infrared Absorption and Ultraviolet Absorption.
For Infrared Absorption, we provide USP <197A> Attenuated Total Reflectance Analysis, <197K> Potassium Bromide Pellet, <197M> Mineral Oil Dispersion and <197F> Suspension Between Plates. For Ultraviolet Absorption, we provide USP <197U> testing. Results are reported as pass/fail as compared to a scan of the reference standard.

Thin Layer Chromatography Identification by USP <201>
Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) identification relies on the comparison of a TLC analysis of an unknown sample to that of a reference substance. The distance traveled by the unknown sample is compared to that of the reference standard. If the compounds travel the same distance, it is considered proof of the identity of the unknown compound.
